Science is all about observation and critical thinking. The more you think critically more you enjoy the depth of science.
Everything which happens around us has a reason behind it .It is always a treat to know about the in-depth reason for simple activities which are happening around us.
Here are some common science phenomena which we see in our daily life. Let’s learn the reason behind them.
1.Water is colorless but Why does in some water bodies it looks blue or green or sometimes yellow?
Reason-Water seems of different color because of scattering of light.
Explanation- Since starting we always heard that water is colorless and transparent liquid but Water is not completely colorless it does scatter the light coming from the sun scattering depending on the wavelength of different spectrum of color. Algae on the surface and other forms of life also influence the color of water bodies. The beautiful underwater life reflects the light on the surface and makes the water look colorful.
2.Why do clouds look reddish orange in the evening?
Reason: The reddish orange color of clouds comes due to the scattering of sun rays from the layer of atmosphere.
Explanation: In the late evening ,when it begins to get dark on the Earth’s surface ,the clouds can still catch the Suns ray for a while longer ,since they are high up ,but to reach the clouds the rays of sun have to pass through the atmosphere almost tangentially. Therefore the distance travelled through air is large. This long path through air leads to molecular scattering. The reddish orange color of clouds comes due to the scattering of sun rays from the layer of atmosphere .Red and orange color of the spectrum scatter less therefore it illuminates.
3.What is the state of Fire is solid liquid or gas?
Reason: Fire is like a plasma consisting of positive or negative charges which join together to emit heat and light.
Explanation: We all know that everything around us matter, there are three states of matter solid liquid or gases. But Fire lies in another state of matter that is plasma .Plasma is a state of matter which is formed due to ionization of charges. Fire is positive or negative charges join together to emit heat and light. It is a process in which mass is transformed into energy.
4.Why do birds sitting on the live wire not get electrocuted?
Reason: Birds do not get electrocuted because some transfer of charge takes place but that charge gets nullified by charge present in the body..
Explanation: You must have seen birds sitting on high voltage wire When a bird sits on live wire ,little current flows through it because it is not in contact with either the neutral or ground wire. Some transfer of charge take place but it is nullified by the charge present in the body. You must have noticed however that on occasions a large bird is unlucky enough to sit on a wire and simultaneously come in contact with a loosely hung neutral wire. It then gets a lethal shock, and sometimes even disrupts the power supply.
5.Why does the universe appear black to us?
Reason: Universe looks black because no visible light is scattered in the universe.
Explanation: From out in space the universe does look black except for the stars and galaxies with which it is studded. This is so because no visible light is scattered in our direction from positions and directions that do not have a star. There is one kind of radiation in which the universe is not at all dark .If we had eyes that could detect microwave radiation ,we would find that the universe is fairly and equally bright in all directions. Although there are different theory to explain the darkness of universe like Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation and Doppler -shifted radiation.
